People say that gossip magazines are their guilty pleasure. I say there’s a much deeper issue here.

When I lived with my mom, it seemed like all she did was buy and read gossip magazines. She would literally lay on the couch and read them cover to cover. While watching celebrity news on TV.

I was never someone to read gossip magazines. I mainly just looked at the pictures, read a couple of sentences here and there, and became completely disgusted by them.

I have contradicting views on following the news. I want to know what’s going on in the world, and I don’t want to not seem ignorant. But bad news on top of bad news really affects my mental health.

I know it’s good to feel informed in what’s going on in the world, but sometimes it’s just not worth it. Sometimes, you really have to put yourself first.

Here are the top reasons I limit the amount of news I watch so I can have better mental health.

Wow. This has felt like the longest six months of my life.

In case you’re new here, I’ve been battling self-harm on and off since I was 14. I’m 23 now, and for about the past two years or so, my addiction became very strong. Hurting myself essentially became my only coping mechanism.

I wrote this letter to myself when I began to realize how bad my situation was becoming. I didn’t realize it until October of last year that I had a self-harm addiction. I also didn’t realize how bad it actually was until I started to recover.

I want to make it clear that while I love Harry Potter, I vehemently disagree with JK Rowling’s ignorant stance on trans people. I have always, and will always, believe in trans rights.

Any time I ever even just think about Harry Potter, I’m automatically calmed down. I don’t know why, but there’s something about it that instantly distracts me from my depression or anxiety.

I love talking with my fellow Potterheads and making inside jokes and references with each other. Let’s face it. Harry Potter is more than a franchise. It’s a family.
