<h3>My Self-Confidence Journey</h3>
<p>I was lucky enough to become comfortable in my own skin pretty much during my junior year&nbsp;of high school.</p>
<p>I was just getting out of a severe depression that was riddled by thoughts of suicide and <a href="http://www.okaynowbreathe.com/my-self-harm-addiction-and-how-im-still-fighting-to-recover/"><strong>self-harm</strong>,</a>&nbsp;and I was learning&nbsp;that there was more to life than caring about what other people thought about me.</p>
<p>Even though I have really bad <strong><a href="http://www.okaynowbreathe.com/how-it-feels-to-have-social-anxiety/">social anxiety</a></strong>,&nbsp;being in front of an audience never really bothered me.</p>
<p>By senior year, I was presenting projects in swimming flippers while&nbsp;making eye contact with everyone in the room.</p>
<p>A couple years later, I even gave a speech about&nbsp;&ldquo;Why You Should Always Be Yourself&rdquo; in my college speech class.</p>
<p>These four years were pivotal in my learning to <strong>feel truly confident in my skin</strong>.</p>

<p>Honestly, a huge part about&nbsp;confidence is<strong> faking it until you make it</strong>.</p>
<p>If you act confident, I guarantee no one will know that you&rsquo;re dead nervous to walk out in stiletto heels and a little black dress.</p>
<p>For a long time, I was scared to try new clothes. I would stick to my jeans and t-shirt.</p>
<p>Now I&rsquo;m all about colored tights and fuzzy socks sticking obnoxiously out of my boots.</p>
<p>And whether you believe in rocking a makeup-free face or not, wearing red lipstick has been said to <strong>increase our confidence</strong>.</p>
<p>I know that whenever I wear lipstick, I feel braver. I feel a little bit more like I can take on the world.</p>
<p>And damn straight, <strong>I feel more confident and sexy</strong>.</p>
<h2>3.<span style="color: #00ccff;"> <strong>STARE AT YOURSELF IN THE MIRROR</strong></span></h2>
<p>This one will probably make you feel hella awkward.</p>
<p>But I promise it will also make you feel more and more amazing as time goes on.</p>
<p>Go ahead and stand in front of a mirror.</p>
<p>Here&rsquo;s the catch.&nbsp;You <strong>cannot </strong>point out your &ldquo;flaws.&rdquo;</p>
<p>This is not the time for bashing words of self-hate. No mean words allowed.</p>
<p><strong>The bathroom has got to be viewed an anti-hate zone</strong>.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Self-Love Zone</h3>
<p>During this exercise, <strong>you can only point out the things that you like about yourself</strong>.</p>
<p>I recommend looking at yourself in the mirror and pointing out the personality traits that you like about yourself long before you start diving deep into the physical parts of yourself.</p>
<p>Only when you can genuinely say that you <strong>like yourself as a person</strong> should you talk about how amazing you look on the outside too!</p>
<h4>My Example:</h4>

<li>I love that I&rsquo;m only 5 feet tall and have to wear kid&rsquo;s shoes.</li>
<li>I love the way my hair feels on the small of my back and that my eyes sparkle in the light.</li>
<li>I love that I have freckles and that I can make so many people smile.</li>

<p>I&rsquo;m talking about moving like you can&rsquo;t stop grooving type of dancing.</p>
<p>If a good tune comes on, I start bobbing my feet and swaying side to side.</p>
<p>If I&rsquo;m excited that a shirt I love is on clearance, I&rsquo;ll put a little extra hip into my happy dance.</p>
<p>I may look like a freakazoid, but who the eff cares? I <strong>am</strong> a freakazoid.</p>
<p>Plus, when people join&nbsp;in on your&nbsp;great dancing skillz, you&rsquo;ll be hit with one of the best feelings in the world.</p>
<h2>5.<strong><span style="color: #00ccff;"> LIMIT SOCIAL MEDIA</span></strong></h2>
<p><strong>Self-confidence is hard to come by</strong>.</p>
<p>It&rsquo;s even tougher when social media is shoved down our throats in nearly every aspect of our lives.</p>
<p>And you know what?&nbsp;<strong>Social media can be the modern day plague. </strong></p>
<p>People are the most vicious online, because they can say whatever they want to whoever they want.</p>
<p>They get to hide away while they deal pain to other people.</p>
<p>I&rsquo;ve literally had a complete internet stranger tell me that I wasn&rsquo;t suicidal and that I was just looking for attention, because I choose to talk about my mental illnesses.</p>
<p>I&rsquo;ve also been sexually harassed numerous times &ndash; I&rsquo;m looking at you <a href="https://www.instagram.com/okaynowbreathe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="broken_link"><strong>Instagram</strong></a>.</p>
<p>There have been too many stories about people ending their lives because of the <a href="https://www.okaynowbreathe.com/cope-with-bullying-on-the-internet/"><strong>bullying</strong></a> on social media.</p>
<p><strong>This has got to stop</strong>.</p>
<p>This is why you should <a href="http://www.okaynowbreathe.com/5-reasons-to-stay-off-social-media/"><strong>limit time on social media</strong></a> like the plague.</p>
<p><strong>You are so much better than the words others throw at you</strong>.</p>

<p>Instead of bullying people in one way or another, we&nbsp;should all try our&nbsp;best to <strong>lift people up</strong>.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Lifting other people up helps lift us up.</p>
<p>So if you&rsquo;re a kind, genuine person, you&rsquo;re already <strong>driving on the road to self-confidence</strong>.</p>
<p>When we make other people feel good about themselves by giving them a genuine compliment, <strong>we will feel the effects of their happiness for a long time</strong>.</p>
<p>Plus, they will feel a little bit more confident in their skin for the rest of the day. It&rsquo;s a win, win!</p>

<p>That&rsquo;s right. Get used to saying nothing at all.</p>
<p>Pay attention to how you feel when you don&rsquo;t react to any of your negative thoughts. <strong>Get comfortable with not giving them power</strong>.</p>

<p>How many times a day do you not believe in your abilities, skills, or even yourself? How many times a day do you catch yourself saying negative insults about yourself?</p>
<p>I&rsquo;m sure you&rsquo;ve caught yourself saying things like: I will never be healthy enough, I&rsquo;m not smart enough, My body will never look the way I want it to.</p>
<p>These negative affirmations are destructive to your self-esteem, your success, and your ability to manage your stress and anxiety.</p>
<p>As soon as you catch yourself thinking negative thoughts, pause and stop yourself. Letting go of negative affirmations might be the most important step in learning to use affirmations correctly.</p>
<h4>2. <strong>Replace with nothing</strong></h4>
<p>That&rsquo;s right. Get used to saying nothing at all.</p>
<p>Pay attention to how you feel when you don&rsquo;t react to any of your negative thoughts. Get comfortable with not giving them power.</p>

<p><strong>The more intense your depression is, the more self-hate you feel.</strong>&nbsp;We have to turn the self-hatred around. You are meant to be here. You are meant to live your life to the absolute fullest.</p>
<p>Most days I hate my life. Most days I can&rsquo;t stand who I am.&nbsp;<em>But</em> I don&rsquo;t always hate myself. I relate this back to the self-love I captured&nbsp;around the time I came out of my first round of severe depression.</p>
<p>I might have off moments, off days, or off months, but I know I&rsquo;m beautiful. And there&rsquo;s absolutely nothing wrong with me knowing that I&rsquo;m a beautiful person.&nbsp;Because <strong>self-love&nbsp;is so damn important.</strong></p>
<p>Here are the 4 ways I practice self-love through depression:</p>

<h1 style="text-align: center;">4 Crucial Ways to Practice Self-Love Through Depression</h1>
<h2>1.<span style="color: #00ccff;"><strong> WRITE IT OUT</strong></span></h2>
<p>I think pretty much the first advice you&rsquo;ll ever hear about anything is to write out what&rsquo;s in your head. Get all your feelings, thoughts, and energies out of your system.</p>
<p>Try not to focus so much about&nbsp;the&nbsp;negative thoughts you have about yourself. Instead, <strong>focus on the sources as to&nbsp;why you don&rsquo;t like yourself.</strong></p>
<p>Does media&rsquo;s unreachable expectations alter your perception of real life? Did you have emotionally abusive parents, or were you bullied all the time?</p>
<p>Please don&rsquo;t pick out examples of what you don&rsquo;t like about yourself. That&rsquo;s such negative, wasted energy. Remember, there are always reasons why we think a certain way.</p>

<p>Go to the bathroom and stand in front of the mirror. I know it might seem weird at first, but it&rsquo;ll get better and less awkward with time.</p>
<p>Let all your preconceived notions of beauty disappear.&nbsp;What do you like about yourself? Do you like the way your eyes sparkle? Does your smile light up a room?&nbsp;What makes you unique?</p>
<p>Please don&rsquo;t compare your body to anyone else&rsquo;s. Your face, your body, your mind are beautiful.</p>

<p>I don&rsquo;t think in the history of anything has&nbsp;self-love ever come naturally to anybody. It takes effort, and it takes&nbsp;self-guidance. <strong>It takes patience and determination.</strong></p>
<p>I know when you have depression, being consistent about anything is a struggle. Your thoughts are your worst enemy. But <em>you</em> have the ability to change your thoughts.</p>
<p>Practice self-love a little bit each and every day. When your first instinct is to criticize yourself, tell yourself otherwise. Laugh off your mistakes. Embrace your quirks.</p>

<p>I am no expert at managing self-harm. In fact, up until recently I was battling a severe <a href="https://www.okaynowbreathe.com/recovery-update-1-year-self-harm-free/">self-harm addiction</a>.</p>
<p>This post contains 6 tips I&rsquo;ve used to help prevent self-harm. Unfortunately, maybe not all of these are going to work you. And what might work one time may not work the next.</p>
<p>But please, please do not give up. Always try your best to keep fighting. Relapses happen. We&rsquo;re all human. That&rsquo;s why it&rsquo;s important to remember that every day is a new beginning. Always remember, the sun must set to rise.</p>

<h1 style="text-align: center;">6 Tips for Preventing Self-Harm</h1>
<h2>1.<span style="color: #00ccff;"><strong> WAIT 10 MINUTES</strong></span></h2>
<p>Whenever you get the urge to self-harm, tell yourself, &ldquo;If I still want to hurt myself in ten minutes, then it&rsquo;s okay for me to do so.&rdquo;</p>
<p>In the meantime, distract your mind and your body. You can download a free printable of <a href="https://www.okaynowbreathe.com/100-self-harm-alternatives-free-printable/">100 Self-Harm Alternatives</a> to find some distractions.</p>
<p>I guarantee that after ten minutes, the urge will have gone down almost completely.</p>
<h2>2.<span style="color: #00ccff;"><strong> PUT ON PANDORA</strong></span></h2>
<p>Music is going to be your best friend in times you feel like you can&rsquo;t control.</p>
<p>I recommend picking music that&nbsp;focuses on soothing melodies and peaceful lyrics.&nbsp;You can even look up the lyrics to the song and sing along to it.</p>

<h2>3.<span style="color: #00ccff;"><strong> SCREAM IT OUT</strong></span></h2>
<p>The overwhelming pressure of keeping in our emotions is exactly why we feel like we need to hurt ourselves in the first place.&nbsp;Energy needs to be released in some&nbsp;way</p>
<p>You can write down what you&rsquo;re feeling in your journal. Write a poem, or write a song. You could even draw out what you&rsquo;re feeling.</p>
<p>If none of that is working, why not yell, scream,&nbsp;punch a pillow, and swear your little heart out?</p>
<h2>4.<span style="color: #00ccff;"><strong> WRITE&nbsp;POSITIVE&nbsp;WORDS</strong></span></h2>
<p>You might not feel it right now, but you have amazing qualities. Qualities that make you unique and special.</p>
<p>Write out these positive traits down in your notebook. You can even write them on Post-Its and stick them all around your room and on your mirrors.</p>
<p>Focus on traits about yourself that you like about yourself. I know it might be hard, but dig deep.</p>

<p>If&nbsp;nothing else seems to work, lay down and close your eyes. Whether it be you going to bed or taking a nap, your mind will eventually be taken to a place where you&rsquo;re not obsessing over trying to get the pain out.</p>
<p>There have been plenty of times when I&rsquo;ve gone to sleep when the energy was just too much. I woke up the next morning grateful that I didn&rsquo;t injure myself the night before.</p>
<h2>6. <strong><span style="color: #00ccff;">TALK TO SOMEONE</span></strong></h2>
<p>Talking about your urges and what you&rsquo;re going through is a great way to relieve your emotions.</p>
<p>Try confiding in a close friend or family member. If you feel like you have nobody to talk to, I&rsquo;ve included some amazing resources down below.<br>
