11 Ways to Heal Childhood Trauma Spiritually (and Awaken Your Inner Child)

How to Heal Childhood Trauma Spiritually

Using spirituality to heal from childhood trauma is a remarkable way to awaken your inner child.

You don’t have to be religious (or even spiritual!) to use the spiritual tools featured in this post to overcome childhood pain, neglect, and trauma.

But to be totally honest, my inner child would still be desperately hurting if I didn’t add these spiritual practices to my life.

What does it take to overcome childhood trauma?

Well…it takes a lot to overcome and heal from childhood trauma.

Most of the healing is done with a trusted therapist, but a lot of healing happens outside of therapy sessions.

In fact, most of my inner child healing was done when I started to incorporate spirituality into my life.

And that’s what we’ll discuss throughout this post.

Spiritual Ways to Heal Your Inner Child

1. MEDITATION

Meditating is one of the best ways you can connect with your inner child.

This healing inner child meditation is incredibly powerful at untangling the bonds of codependency.

You’ll be encouraged to visualize your younger self, while forgiving, honoring, and loving them.

The first time I listened to the meditation, so many built up emotions pooled out of my eyes as I cried.

2. EFT TAPPING

Tapping, also known as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), is based on a combination of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology.

So basically, you use your fingertips to tap specific meridian points (or energy hot spots) on your body while speaking life-changing affirmations to help balance your body’s energy.

The first time I tried tapping for my wounded inner child, I cried out years worth of blocked emotions.

3. REIKI

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique based on the Eastern belief that vital energy flows through your body.

During a Reiki session, a practitioner uses gentle touch — or places their palms just above your body — to help guide stagnant or blocked energy in a way that enhances balance and healing.

Depending on the flow of energy they perceive through their hands, the practitioner may move their hands in up to 15 different positions and various lengths of time.

A typical session lasts anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes, and you might experience sensations in your body, such as pulsating, tingling, or heat.

You might even see visualizations (like pictures or colors) or have memories from childhood reappear.

4. CHAKRA WORK

Chakra work has been absolutely pivotal in my inner child healing journey.

Chakras are a network of seven major energy centers arranged vertically along the core of your body.

These spinning wheels of energy correspond to major organsbundles of nerves, and other areas of our body that affect us emotionally and physically.

You can align your chakras with things like yoga, meditation, and affirmations.

5. TAROT READING

Discovering tarot cards changed my life — in every way possible.

I randomly stumbled across a pick a card tarot reading on YouTube (from Stargirl the Practical Witch) that was in my recommendations.

I was skeptical when I clicked on it, but wow… everything was spot on, and my life changed at that exact moment.

And now I use tarot cards as a form of shadow work to get to the gritty parts of my childhood that still need to be explored.

In the same vein, oracle cards are incredible for inner child healing.

7. CRYSTALS

Soon after discovering tarot and oracle cards, I discovered the healing benefits of crystals.

To be completely honest…I used to think crystal healing was a crock of s-h-i-t.

But then I held my first crystal (an orange calcite), and man oh man, did I become a believer.

Neglect, abuse, and trauma change us as people, and stones and crystals can help us heal and connect with who we truly are.

8. ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice based on the idea that a blockage in the flow of the body’s life energy, or qi, can cause a variety of physical and mental health issues.

During the acupuncture session, acupuncturists insert thin, sterile needles into specific points of your body to address your condition.

This helps balance your body’s energy, stimulate healing, and promote relaxation.

The acupuncturist may gently twist the needles for added effect.

A typical session lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, with the needles being left in for 15 to 20 minutes of the total time.

9. BREATHING EXERCISES

Healing your inner child is brutal, stressful work, and we can all benefit from breathing exercises.

Square breathing is by far my favorite breathing exercise…

Square Breathing (4×4 Box Method) ⤵️

  1. Close your eyes
  2. Inhale slowly for a count of 4
  3. Hold your breath for a count of 4
  4. Exhale gently through your mouth for a count of 4
  5. Pause and hold for the count of 4.
  6. Repeat steps 2 through 5

Square breathing is a type of breathwork that can connect you more deeply to your body by calming your nervous system and reducing stress in your body.

10. PRAYER

Whether you’re religious or not, prayer can be a gentle way to connect with your inner child.

When you search for guidance in healing, you’ll usually find the answers you’re seeking for inside yourself.

11. A RELEASING RITUAL

What have you been holding onto that you need to release?

A releasing ritual can help you say goodbye to a thought, feeling, event, or person once and for all.

A releasing ritual:

1️⃣ Write down what you’re releasing in as much detail as possible

2️⃣ Be intentional in how you let go

3️⃣ Release the burdens
